This adorable crocheted Kids Slouch Hat would make a gorgeous handmade gift. The pattern is free, easy and great for beginners! Pick up that crochet hook!

I recently took the Crochet Lab class on Craftsy and learned how to crochet in just 1 week! After making several granny squares and crocheted flowers I started to explore Ravelry in search of a crochet pattern that was easy enough for a beginner. I found this fabulous Urban Jungle Crocheted Slouch Beanie created by Vickie Howell (who also happens to be the instructor for Crochet Lab.)

I decided to give it a try and two days later I had this fabulous slouch hat in my hot little hands.

Bean loved my hat, but the pattern was for an adult size, what to do, what to do… Well I decided to take what I learned from Vickie’s pattern, make a few changes, and create a hat of my own.

UPDATE: People ask me all the time to teach them to crochet. I learned how to crochet in a week with a crochet class that I took on Craftsy! The class is no longer available but this Crochet Basics and Beyond class from Kim Werker looks awesome.

I also am crazy about Creative Bug (you may remember my post on learning line drawing with Lisa Congdon) and love that you can pay just $4.95 a month and have access to all of their classes! They have a How To Crochet class with Carla Scott, the Executive Editor of Vogue Knitting International that looks great! I love that with online classes you can pause and rewind them as many times as you like and access them whenever you need a little refresher.

Crocheted Kids Slouch Hat Pattern From Sew Creative 5

Here is a pattern for a crocheted kids slouch hat. Please let me know if you have any questions. I’m new to this so I hope you can understand my instructions.

Changes I made from the adult hat:

  • Sizing
  • Single Crochet around entire band of hat to clean up any uneven edges
  • Join band with single crochet instead of “sewing” band together
  • Puff stitch with 7 loops instead of 9
  • Puff in space between puffs below instead of puffing through the chain below (much easier for beginners)

Crocheted Kids Slouch Hat Pattern:

This hat is worn almost the way someone would wear a headband. Measure your child’s head from top of head near bangs, down and around behind ears. Subtract 2 inches from this measurement to allow for stretch and this will be the length that you want your band to be. I find that head circumference is usually pretty darn close to the same size as the “headband measurement” so if you don’t have access to the child’s measurements refer to this handy, dandy head sizing chart. I included general measurements for different ages size 12 month to 10 years below. The measurements are based on the sizes in this head sizing chart.

You will need:

  • Approximately 200 yards of yarn
  • Crochet Hook (I used an I hook, you can use whatever is suggested for your yarn, I tend to go up one hook size from what is recommended.)
  • Yarn Needle

Stitches Used:

Chain (ch), single crochet (sc), slip stitch (sl st), puff.

Puff stich:

Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch and draw up a loop
(3 loops on hook), [yarn over, insert hook in same stitch and draw up a loop] 2
times (7 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through first 6 loops on hook, yarn
over and draw through remaining 2 loops on hook.

For a visual on how to puff stitch see this video.

Now lets get started!

For band of hat:

Ch 6.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—5 sc.
Row 2: Ch 1, working in front loops only, sc in each st across, turn.
Repeat last row until piece measures 16″(size 12m) 17″ (size 2t), 18″ (size 3-5t) 19″ (size 6-10).

When you reach desired length for the band ch1 then sc around your band. First sc along the long side, then the short end where you started, then the other long side. You will want to do one sc by each rib in the band and then one sc between each rib. When you finish sc around 3 sides, sc the two ends of your band together to create the band of the hat. Here is a great video on how to seam to edges together using single crochet.

For Body of Hat:

After you have single crocheted together your seam begin Round 1 by:

Ch 3, sk first sc, Puff in next sc, ch 1, *sk next sc, Puff in next sc, ch1; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch.

Round 2: Ch 3, Puff in space between each puff from previous round, after each puff ch 1. When you get to the end of this round instead of joining with a slip stitch continue by putting a puff into the next space, this will prevent a seam from forming at the back of your hat.

From here repeat last round by Puff 1, ch 1, until hat measures 8.5″(size 12m) 9″ (size 2t), 9.5″ (size 3-5t) 10″ (size 6-10″) from the bottom of the band.

Do not fasten off.

Closing Top of Hat:

Last round worked is top of hat. Hook is currently at top,
back center of hat. Keeping loop on hook, insert hook into top, center front of
hat, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook
(sc complete). Pinch side edges to the same center point and sc the edges
together (by inserting hook through both thicknesses and completing an sc).
The top of the hat will now be in a star formation. Continue to pinch opposite
edges and sc them together until top of hat is completely closed. Fasten off.
Weave in ends.

    1. Kristi I am so sorry I somehow missed this comment.

When closing this hat pinch in the opposite sides of the hat and single crochet. Continue doing this around the hat pinching each section to the opposite side and inserting a single crochet. the top of the hat will have almost a star look to it when closed.

Alternatively you could probably sew it closed with a tapestry needle.

      Best Wishes,

      Crystal
