What Does It Mean To Be A Girl? With Sears Canada

What Does It Mean To Be A Girl With Sears Canada.jpg What does it mean to you to be a girl? To be a woman? To be female? If you had asked that question when I was a teenager my answer probably would have been very different from my answer now.

Me at age 19 & Me at age 35.

To me, being female means I am strong, I have birthed children, I have labored for 4 days, fighting for the VBAC that I so desperately wanted, refusing to go under the knife for another c-section. Accomplishing this made me believe that I could move mountains.

The kiddos and me. 12 hours after my successful VBAC when the kids met for the first time.

It means I can juggle countless balls and keep them all in the air– Mother, homemaker, full time employee, blogger, networker, friend, daughter, sister. No one knows how to multitask like a mother.

It means that I will fight for what I believe in. If I see someone being treated unjustly, I will not remain silent. I will be a voice for the voiceless. I am woman, hear me roar.

Sears also believes in being a voice for those who are struggling to be heard. They have teamed up with Because I Am A Girl in an ongoing partnership to improve the lives of girls in developing countries and give them equal access to health care, education, protection, independence and an opportunity to participate in society.

This spring Sears has collaborated with Plan Canada to create limited edition t-shirts and totes made in Bangladesh. One hundred percent (100%) of the proceeds of the sales will be given to Because I’m a Girl to be invested back into Bangladesh to provide education and community programs for girls. The shirts are now only $14.97 and the totes are $9.97.

So what kind of things will your money go towards? Do you know any young teenage girls? In Bangladesh 66% of girls under the age of 18 are being forced into arranged marriage. The average age of the girls getting married is 15 years old. Children as young as 10 are being placed into marriages with older men. Many have children of their own by the time they are 13. These girls are being pulled out of school and abandoning their education and dreams to become wives, mothers and homemakers.

Groups of Bangladeshi children are starting to band together to form councils to stop child marriages. Watch this touching video about how one group has stopped 7 child marriages in their community.

Shop the rest of the Girl Confidential collection, all year long and 1% of the proceeds will be donated to Because I’m am a Girl. Just check out all of these great clothes for girls!

Sears is also having a Newborn Nesting Event! If you have a little one on the way, make sure you check it out.

Tell me… What does it mean to you to be a female? What have you done recently to give back to our global community?

Such a great cause, Crystal! The power of community is an amazing one. It is amazing to see how this group of children have changed the way a community looks at child marriage. It’s inspiring.

      Hi Tara,

I’m in complete agreement. I love how a group of youth are changing the things they don’t agree with on their own, and then have a strong community of adults to back them up if they need help. We should do more to encourage our youth to make change.

      Best Wishes,

      Crystal
